David Wildung started working for the University of Minnesota in 1969 as a horticulturist after completing graduate studies here. Over the years, Wildung has created six new varieties of blueberries and four new varieties of strawberries. More recent work includes developing a manual for high tunnel vegetables. The University of Minnesota’s newest apple, honoring him with a patent under the name ‘Wildung’ will be known to consumers as Snowsweet™. Wildung has also conducted research in small fruits, woody ornamental plants, chrysanthemums, annual flowers, and cold hardiness. Dr. Wildung retired in 2007. He remains a resident of Grand Rapids and continues to provide guidance and seeks to both maintain relationships with established interested parties and to develop new relationships that will enhance NCROC.
